[How-To] Taking Care of A Bedridden Elder

Hi Internet,

The purpose of this post is to teach you how to take care of your bedridden elder, it could be your family member, friends or relatives. This post is also a reminder for me to use in the future in case I forget.

This guide is for people who does not have much financial capacity to hire professional care. I strongly rcommend people who has the capacity to opt for professional care 24 hours.

If you are in the same circumstances as mine where you dont have the financial capacity, do your best to accomodate the need of your elderly. You will be exhausted physically and mentally but persevere and I truly believe that we will get rewarded.

First and foremost, hygiene.
Make sure that the room being used by your elder is hygienic and try to maintain it that way. Do not let it stink of poo and urine. I am sorry if my language is a bit harsh. Sweep food residues and mop the floor with anti bacterial solutions. This will inhibit bacteria growth.

2)  Shower
If you have the manpower to carry the elder into the shower that would be ideal. If not, wipe him with wet towel. I would dip the towels into soap solutions. Wash your elder properly and respectfully, he still has rights eventhough he is disabled.
Make sure you wash every crevices. There is no such thing as disgusting. This is normal, we all poop and urinate. Dont let your mind to be distracted. You want to focus on the outcome of your deed.

3) Clothing
Let him wear adult diapers. You can buy these at your local supermarket. Spread baby powder on the body so that your elder wont feel itchy throughout the day. Let him wear fresh clothes.

4) Entertainment
Open the television in his room so that he could stay informed and not isolated. Talk to your elder, no matter what. Show him that you care eventhough he has dementia. Say that you love him.

5)If he poops in the diapers.
First, throw away the diapers. Lay him down and wipe his bottom with wet tissue. Make sure it is clean! Could not emphasize this enough. If the poop spreaded on the bed sheet, lift the elder up after cleaning him up to change the bed sheet and change the bed. (Also you should buy waterproof beed like they use in hospitals)

6)Commitment.
Last but not least, this act of kindness needs commitment on your part. Like I said previously, you will be exhausted mentally and physically. But know that, the elder is also a human being and if he is your parent, know that he once took care of you when you were a child.
Show him respect.

Be kind,
Yasashii Men
