[opinion] Happiness and Money and Sacrifice
Happiness and Money and Sacrifice
| I'll stick to my occasional Jjajangmyun and Kaarage dinner thanks |
This is a confusing issue for me, I aspire to be a financially independent person by 40. I prefer to be that way because I want my future kids to have the best healthcare, top education, and security. Some people are just satisfied with average lifestyle. I want to be rich, I desire to be one.
Happiness in my dictionary is to spend time giving back to the society, helping the needy and a great lifestyle. For me to achieve my happiness, I need to secure myself first. By doing this, I can contribute greatly to those groups of needy at a significant level.
Last week, I spoke with my colleagues about how one of them ate bread for 3 straight years during lunch. For confidential sake, let's name him HC. I also noticed that HC always cut his hair bald to save money from grooming his hair. Then one of the Chinese supervisors said "Don't underestimate him, he owns 3 houses" and he sleeps with a lot of money underneath his pillow. The statement from the supervisor leaves a bad taste in my mouth. A lot of Malaysian Chinese are well known for their stinginess, I did not know that it would reach this stage. I am not being a racist, I said so because this value comes with their culture.
Is this jealousy from my part? Or is it just plain stinginess? I don't see him socializing much with other colleagues, sacrificing his social life in order to have plenty of money for the future. I guess that this is one of the ways to be rich. Save, save and save.
However, that is not the way I want to follow, being wealthy that way leaves you with no friends. In the end, you will feel empty and alone. HC is on the way to be financially independent in a short time, sacrificing his social life.
In conclusion, to have something great, you need to do great things and that includes eating bread for lunch for every single day. Kudos HC.
